Company joins cause to raise awareness of heart disease as No. 1 killer of womenMINNEAPOLIS, Oct 06, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SUPERVALU INC.(R) (NYSE: SVU), one of the
largest companies in the U.S. grocery channel whose nationwide family of
stores includes ACME(R), ALBERTSONS(R),
bigg's(R), CUB FOODS(R),
FARM FRESH(R), HORNBACHER'S(R),
JEWEL-OSCO(R), LUCKY(R),
SHAW'S(R), SHOP 'N
SAVE(R) and SHOPPERS FOOD & PHARMACY(R),
announced today its new support of the American Heart Association's
Go Red For Women to educate women about the risk factors for heart
disease and to urge them to take action to reduce their personal risk.
SUPERVALU has signed on as a national supporter of Go Red For Women
through 2011.
"SUPERVALU is proud to support the American
Heart Association in their commitment to protecting the health of all
women by raising awareness of the risk of heart disease and providing
information on how to reduce your risk," said
Jeff Noddle, SUPERVALU chairman and CEO. "While
heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, it
is also largely preventable, and SUPERVALU is pleased to support the
efforts of Go Red For Women to promote heart-healthy living for women
across the country."
Health and nutrition is one of SUPERVALU's
designated areas of focus for its charitable giving and volunteer
activities, along with hunger relief and environmental stewardship.
SUPERVALU is planning activities to raise awareness among its customers
and to engage its 190,000 associates in support of Go Red For Women,
including in-store promotions, advertising, and events. SUPERVALU retail
stores will also display featured products that fit into a heart-healthy
lifestyle as well as other Go Red For Women information. Activities are
expected to begin in early 2009.
"Our new relationship with SUPERVALU will
allow us to reach even more women as we fight their number one killer,
heart disease" said David Josserand, American
Heart Association Board Chairman and Chief Strategic Officer of The
Dalton Agency in Jacksonville, Fla. "We are
grateful for SUPERVALU's enthusiasm and
dedication to this cause, which will provide support to Go Red For
Women, so more resources can be made available that give women the
knowledge to make life-saving choices everyday."
Go Red For Women challenges women to know their risk for heart disease
and to take action to reduce their personal risk. Furthermore, the cause
plays a leading role in providing women with the tools they need to lead
heart-healthy lives. Using the Go Red Heart CheckUp, women can go online
and provide key health numbers and lifestyle information to learn their
10-year personal risk for heart disease. The assessment provides a
report that women can use as a guideline for discussing heart health
with their doctor and then put that awareness into action by developing
a personal health plan that matches their individual needs.
"As one of the country's
largest grocery retailers, SUPERVALU is dedicated to supporting programs
that educate and promote healthy lifestyles and nutrition,"
said Pam Knous, SUPERVALU executive vice president and chief financial
officer, chair of last year's Twin Cities Go
Red For Women Campaign, and member of the American Heart Association's
Operating Committee. "Go Red For Women
provides the information and the tools to empower women to make
lifesaving choices about their health."
According to the American Heart Association, more than 42 million
American women are living with one or more types of cardiovascular
disease, yet only one in five women view heart disease as their greatest
health threat. Each year, cardiovascular disease kills approximately
460,000 women -- almost one per minute --
and more than the next five causes of death combined, including cancer.
